About Project Management Institute (PMI®)

Project Management Institute (PMI®)
established in 1969 and headquartered outside Philadelphia, Pennsylvania USA, the Project Management Institute (PMI) is the world's leading not-for-profit project management professional association, with over 100,000 members worldwide.

The first seeds of PMI were cast in 1967 when a small group of project management professionals met to discuss the prospect of establishing an organization, which specifically served the unique interests of project management specialists. The Institute was officially incorporated in 1969 as a non-profit organization. Later in 1981, PMI was reclassified as a business league and given a non-profit status.

The founders are John King, J. Gordon Davis, Susan Gallagher, Eric Jenett, James Snyder and Ned Engman. On its fifteenth anniversary at the Annual Seminar/Symposium in Philadelphia, PMI administered the first certification exam. A new era of its history began.

Since its inception, PMI has dedicated its attention to promoting the recognition and acceptance of project management as a discipline and profession. The vision for the Project Management Institute is to be respected throughout the world for advancing project management excellence through professionalism.

PMI is committed tp the continuous improvement and expansion of the PMBOK® Guide.

Certification
PMI became the first organization in the world to have professional certification program to advance the project management profession and to recognize the achievements of individuals in project management. PMI's Project Management Professional (PMP®) certification is the world's most recognized professional credential for individuals associated with project management. In 1999, PMI Certification Program attained recognition of International Organization for Standartization (ISO) 9001.

Research
PMI is focused on the expansion of the body of knowledge of the project management profession. Project management research is encouraged through a biennial project management research conference, external research grants, research books, a research database and identification of research topics. Additionally, current needs, information, knowledge and wisdom about the profession are collected and disseminated, the future of the profession is assessed and the evolution of the profession is encouraged.
